The Lord-Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Lady Haughey CBE, visited Lanarkshire Army Cadets on Saturday 12 October at their Training Centre near Cambuslang. The Commandant, Colonel Derek Coulter, and the Cadets’ Company Commander, Captain Kenny Boag, explained the proud history and purpose of the Army Cadet Force – a voluntary national youth organisation sponsored by the Army and operating across the United Kingdom. In addition to military-themed training, young Scots from 12 to 18 participate in a wide range of sports, adventure training activities and visits overseas. Lady Haughey later toured the Centre, watching the training and meeting with the Cadets and their Adult Instructors. Nearly 700 Cadets from Glasgow and Lanarkshire benefit from the life-long skills that they learn. And there’s always room for more. Lady Haughey said, ‘The enthusiasm and dedication of the Cadets is plain to see. They are having fun but at the same time they are learning the importance of self-discipline, team work, respect for others, integrity, commitment and loyalty. These skills set them up for life.’
